Feast or Famine

We're seeing social media posts from some of our photographer friends about a restful January that followed busy season. Is that you? Have you been sneaking in more Netflix, puzzles, and coffee dates?

One of those photographers candidly shared that January/February always brings fear that the phone will never ring again, that her business is doomed, and that no one likes her. I laughed at the last comment because she's delightful and very popular. Her business is solid, and she'll be busy again in no time.

But isn't it stressful that most photographers live a "feast or famine" lifestyle when it comes to workload and income? Karen and I have felt that on a deep level for years, and we've slowly been making changes within each of our businesses to help even out our calendars (and incomes).

Our two most impactful ways of doing this are 1) sharing a studio with other photographers so that we can have sessions year-round no matter the weather, and 2) offering photography services that aren't seasonal, like headshots, e-commerce photography, and newborn sessions.

Slowly but surely, these two things have season-proofed our businesses. Sure, there are still 'busy' and 'slow' times in our line of work, but they are more balanced than ever. We feel much more in control over our calendars both inside and outside of business because of the equilibrium that we've worked towards.

Do you feel in control of your calendar? If not, do you have a plan to create a more balanced workload for the rest of 2022? We want to hear about it and cheer you on!
